Confidentiality
Professional counsellors and therapists work to a clear ethical code. This may vary slightly between therapists, but it does mean that they offer a very high degree of confidentiality. They will take great care to protect your identity and personal details.

However, there are limits to the confidentiality a counsellor can offer, for both legal and ethical reasons. In particular, your counsellor may break confidentiality where they believe that there is a serious risk to yourself or others, or when compelled by law to reveal information. In most cases they would discuss this with you first.

Your counsellor should discuss the issue of confidentiality and its limitations at the beginning of your work together. This is important for you to understand, so please do ask for further information from your chosen therapist if there is anything you are not sure about.
